Refresh this page throughout the night for running updates from Game 1 of the East 4-A Regional series between Lee County and Wilmington Laney, thanks to Herald sportswriter Ryan Sarda.
6:30 p.m. Right now, Laney is warming up on the field. Lee County is stretching in the left hand corner of the field beside their dugout. The Yellow Jackets are still wearing their camoflauge jerseys and Laney is wearing gold shirts and white pants. The stands, although small, still have people filing in. The Lee County faithful have gathered right beside their team’s dugout. There are no bleachers in that section, they all brought their own chairs and are set up along the fence. Laney has a big rock in front of the school that is painted in Laney’s colors and reads “Go Bucs.”
6:52 p.m. Charlie Spivey and Laney head coach Vern Barker are meeting at home plate with three umpires. The Yellow Jackets got a loud ovation when they both took the field for warmups and walked off the field after warmups. Once again, the Yellow Jacket crowd has traveled well.
6:59 p.m. Note about Game 2: it is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday. Game 3 will be an hour afterwards. And then there’s this: after Game 2, everyone has to leave the stadium and pay to re-enter for Game 3.
Top of the first inning
Three up, three down for Lee County after a half an inning. No runs, no hits, no errors. 0-0.
Bottom of the first inning
Shaky inning for Lee County pitcher Nick Durazo. Ryan LaGrange leads off the inning with an infield single. Durazo strikes out Luke Tendler swinging. Pitcher Dallas Perdue hits Durazo’s fastball out of the park for a two-run HR. Laney takes a 2-0 lead.
Top of the second inning
With two outs, Durazo reaches base on a walk. He’s replaced on base by Chris Thompson. Thompson advances to second on a walk by Perdue. Cody Palmer’s single scores Thompson from second to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
Bottom of the second inning
Laney adds three runs in the bottom of the second and builds a 5-1 lead after two.
Top of the third inning
Julio Parades with a solo home run in the top of the third with two outs. Cuts into the lead and makes it 5-2, Laney.
Furl walks. Carson Wilson hits a double to send Furl to third. Two outs, two runners in scoring position. Laney is having a conference at the mound with pitcher Dallas Perdue. Frye at bat.
Frye flies out to end the threat. End 2.5 5-2, Laney.
Bottom of the third inning
Durazo is pulled after two innings. Charlie Spivey sends in Russell Clark to pitch. Clark is making his first appearance this postseason.
Clark doesn’t allow a run in his first inning on the hill. He struck out the last batter of the inning, Raleigh Stoughton. For the first inning of the game, the Yellow Jackets did not allow a run and the score remains 5-2 in favor of Laney.
Top of the fourth inning
With two outs, Garrett Verrilli hits a single, which puts runners on first and second. Zach Bradford flies out to end the inning. 5-2, Laney.
Bottom of the fourth inning
Two on in the bottom of the fourth. Spivey is bringing in Tyler Castleberry to relieve Clark. Castleberry is also making his first appearance of the postseason.
Castleberry has a nasty curve. Strikes out Perdue. Laney adds a run, 6-2, end four.
Top of the fifth inning
Parades leads off the inning with a walk, but is later picked off. Not much went down in fifth. Still 6-2, Laney.
Bottom of the fifth inning
Spivey going through pitchers the way Southern Lee goes through football coaches. Chase Arrington relieves Tyler Castleberry in fifth.
It’s getting ugly. Five runs in fifth inning for Laney, the big blow a two-run homer from Luke Tandler. Up 11-2.
Little of consequence, other than Laney wraps up a complete victory. The final remains the same — 11-2.
Laney leads the best-of-three series 1-0. Game 2 will be played at 11 a.m. Saturday.
