ATHENS DRIVE 26, LEE COUNTY 25

RALEIGH — When Carlos Ocampo’s 40-yard field goal attempt with 3 seconds remaining sailed wide right, it doomed any chance the Lee County football team had of defeating Athens Drive.

The field goal was long enough, but not quite straight enough, as Athens Drive won its first Tri-9 Conference game of the season 26-25 over the Yellow Jackets in thrilling fashion.

Leading 25-19, the Yellow Jackets melted roughly six minutes off the clock before punting the ball back to the Jaguars with 2:32 remaining.

The Jaguars were set up on their own 45-yard line. Kyree Green helped them get into Lee County territory with two running plays for 22 yards and a 17-yard pass thrown by quarterback Ben Snotherly.

With 1st-and-10 on the Lee County 22-yard line, Green again ran for five yards to the 17. On third-and-goal on the 9, Snotherly found Peter Singer open in the end zone with 48 ticks remaining, capping a 55-yard drive in less than 2 minutes. Jason Curfman kicked the extra point through the uprights and the Jaguars took the 26-25 lead.

The Yellow Jackets still had plenty of fight left in them, though.

With just 19 seconds left, Yellow Jacket quarterback Carson Wilson found Israel Williams for a 59-yard completion that took the ball within Jaguar territory on the 28, which set up Ocampo’s final attempt in the latter stages of the game.

WESTERN HARNETT 48, SOUTHERN LEE 0

SANFORD — As good as Shaun McLean was for the Western Harnett Eagles on Friday night, Montrez Hooker had the run of the night.

The diminutive reserve tailback didn’t get a carry until deep into the fourth quarter, and that first one went for a loss of seven yards.

Apparently he was being weighed down.

On his second rush, Hooker eluded four would-be Southern Lee tacklers, reversing field and somehow staying on his feet despite having his jersey tugged this way and that. He spun around so much he literally came out of his shoes — both of them — and then took off down the right sideline for an improbable 50-yard touchdown.

Just call him Shoeless Montrez Hooker from now on.

It didn’t decide the game, not in a matchup that ended 48-0 in Western Harnett’s favor, but it was the most dazzling highlight on a night filled with them for the Eagles, who rushed for 395 yards total, getting 237 of them and two touchdowns from McLean.

The Eagles (2-4, 1-1) moved within two victories of qualifying for the state playoffs for the second consecutive season under first-year head coach George Coltharp, winning the last in a string of a four-game road trip.

With the win, Western Harnett also shut out both of Lee County’s teams to the tune of a combined score of 68-0.

NORTHWOOD 14, SOUTHERN VANCE 7

HENDERSON — Two drives and stout defense were enough to keep the Northwood Chargers unbeaten on Friday night.

Sam Griffin threw two touchdown passes to A.J. Farmer on Northwood’s first two drives and the defense held off a late charge as the Chargers defeated the Southern Vance Raiders 14-7 in varsity football action.

Shane Peppers added more than 100 yards on the ground and Dylan Davis made an interception late as the Raiders were driving.

Northwood is now 7-0 on the season.
