Leesville Road 48, Southern Lee 0

SANFORD — Another game, another rough outing for the Southern Lee Cavaliers.

And another impressive showing for the Leesville Road Pride.

Leesville Road scored on all six of its first-half possessions to stay unbeaten to start the season after a 48-0 shutout of the winless Cavaliers on Friday night.

The Pride has now outscored its opponents 192-44, or an average of 38-9 per game, while the Cavaliers have now been outscored a combined 257-19, an average of 51-4.

Nate Whittington led the Pride’s balanced offensive attack with 103 yards rushing and a touchdown on just seven carries while quarterback Josh Stanley ran for 40 yards and threw for a score to help Leesville Road improve to 5-0 on the season.

Southern Lee was hamstrung by turnovers. Quarterback A.J. Jackson, who threw for more than 200 yards in last week’s encouraging performance against defending state 4-A champion Seventy-First, was intercepted three times, all of which set up second-quarter touchdowns for the Pride, who led 41-0 at the half.

Holly Springs 10, Lee County 6

HOLLY SPRINGS — Lee County was less than two minutes away from getting new head coach Burton Cates his first Tri-9 Conference win in his 25-year coaching career.

But Holly Springs, the conference newcomer, rallied from three points down to score the game-winning touchdown to defeat the Yellow Jackets 10-6 on Friday night at Golden Hawk Stadium, earning its first Tri-9 conference win in school history.

With 1:01 remaining in the fourth quarter, Holly Springs quarterback Mike Roach found wide receiver Marc Jones for a 38-yard touchdown pass to put the Hawks ahead 9-6. Nick Hohns added the extra point to give the Hawks the lead.

“It was just a breakdown in our defensive secondary,” said Cates, who has 236 wins in his coaching career. “We had done a good job in stopping them all night long but we had a lapse in our coverage and they were able to take advantage of it and got the score.”

With 1st and 10 on their own 20, the Yellow Jackets had to go down the field for 80 yards for the score. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets made it just 12 yards to their 32 as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

The Yellow Jacket defense had gone almost six complete quarters without allowing an offensive touchdown. Against Apex last week, the Yellow Jackets shut the Cougars out in the second half and led 6-3 until Jones made the game-winning reception.

“I was pleased with our effort for 47 minutes tonight,” said Cates. “This was a tough loss for our guys.”

Chatham Central 33, Wake Christian Academy 14

BEAR CREEK – Leslie DeGraffenreid rushed for 142 yards and a TD and Adam Wilson ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns as the Chatham Central Bears defeated the Wake Christian Academy Bulldogs 33-14 in football action Friday night. The Bears put up 367 yards of total offense in the victory at home.

Northwood 19, Providence Grove 14

CLIMAX — Northwood wasn’t able to tie the school record of 20 consecutive quarters without allowing an offensive touchdown.

But the Chargers did get a huge win as they defeated Providence Grove 19-14 on Friday night at Providence Grove High School.

Quarterback Sam Griffin was 8-of-21 passing with 104 yards and two touchdowns. In the first quarter, trailing 7-0, Griffin found Austin Matthews open for a 21-yard touchdown reception. Later on, Griffin completed a 14-yard pass to Ridge Smith to go up 14-7.

In the third quarter, Northwood’s defense forced a safety to go up 16-14. With 1:35 remaining in the third quarter, Josue Pena kicked a 35-yard field goal to make it 19-14.

Tailback Shane Peppers had 24 carries for 126 yards to lead the Chargers. Matthews had two catches for 42 yards and the score.
