Apex 17, Lee County 13

SANFORD — Lee County’s second half comeback attempt came up just short against Apex on Friday night at Paul Gay Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets held the Cougars scoreless in the second half and scored 10 unanswered points, but it wasn’t enough as Apex won its first game of the season 17-13 in the Tri-9 Conference opener.

Although the scoreboard won’t show it, the Yellow Jackets outplayed the Cougars statistically. The Yellow Jackets had 253 total yards of offense compared to 205 for Apex. Defensively, the Yellow Jackets allowed just 54 yards from the Cougars in the second half.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as the Yellow Jackets fall to 0-1 in the conference and 1-3 overall.

“I am proud of every one of my guys,” said Lee County coach Burton Cates. “None of them quit. When we got down by 17 points, they kept fighting all the way to the end. When you have a team that does that, you’ve got something special.”

For the second straight game, the Yellow Jackets accumulated over 200 yards of rushing. Omar Murriell led the way with 28 carries for 158 yards. Cedric Gray had 15 carries for 67 yards and a two-yard touchdown run on the opening drive in the third quarter.

Seventy-First 42, Southern Lee 12

FAYETTEVILLE — The Southern Lee Cavaliers did something on Friday night they hadn’t done all season.

They led.

Using a trick play on their first offensive series, Southern Lee drove 90 yards and A.J. Jackson ran in from 2 yards to give Southern Lee a quick 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Seventy-First (2-2), however, scored the next 36 points in a 42-12 victory.

Still, if it was progress new Cavaliers coach Eric Puryear was looking for, he may have seen it.

The Cavaliers (0-4) trailed 36-6 at the half after fumbling a kickoff and having a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, but hung around in the second half, using a 67-yard drive near the end of the third quarter to match the defending state 4-A champion Falcons touchdown-for-touchdown in the second half.

That drive was capped with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Jackson to Shakir Alston.

Jackson finished the game 10 of 17 for a season-high 208 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Jackson and Ace Chalmers, who had 115 yards receiving on three catches, hooked up for 88 yards on Southern Lee’s first offensive play of the game. Southern Lee quarterback Ashton Gaines lateraled to Jackson, who threw a bomb to Chalmers down to the Falcons’ 2-yard line. Jackson scored from there.

Willie Thompson rushed for 178 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns while Maurice Scruggs had 97 yards rushing on nine carries. He also scored twice.

Seventy-First totaled 351 yards of offense while Southern Lee, despite rushing for minus-5 yards, had 211 total yards.

Colby Thornton added 46 yards receiving on six catches while Quentin Ingram had 25 yards on three receptions. Alston had two grabs for 15 yards.

Northwood 42, Chapel Hill 0

PITTSBORO — The Northwood Chargers are rolling.

Sam Griffin threw for four touchdowns while Shane Peppers rushed for 113 yards and a score as the Chargers stayed unbeaten to open the season with a 42-0 victory over Chapel Hill (0-4) in football on Friday night.

The Northwood defense did not give up a single point for the fourth time this season — the only score to come against Northwood was an interception returned for a touchdown by Western Harnett — and the stingy Chargers allowed just 105 total yards.

Northwood (4-0) also picked off three passes, getting interceptions from Paul Shackleford, Dylan Davis and Brenden DiBernard.

A.J. Farmer had three rectpions for 52 yards and a touchdown, Peppers had a 45-yard touchdown catch and Ridge Smith made dazzling moves to score from 3 yards out on a pass play from Griffin. Smith also rushed twice for 44 yards and a score.

Northwood plays Providence Grove next week.
