SANFORD — This year, The Brick goes back to Lee County.

The Yellow Jackets cruised to an easy 55-7 victory over cross-town rival Southern Lee in Brick City Bowl IV on Friday night at Paul Gay Stadium, winning The Brick for the first time since 2006.

In a stellar performance from the offensive line, running and passing lanes were wide open for the Yellow Jackets to exploit all game long as they scored on all but two possessions. The win gives Lee County its first victory of the 2009 season and the first of the Burton Cates era.

Senior quarterback Dakota Hart, senior tailback Omar Murriell and junior tailback Cedric Gray also earned their first wins against the Cavaliers with career performances against the Cavaliers.

The two-headed monster at tailback combined for a total of 269 yards and four scores to guide the Yellow Jackets. Gray had 15 carries for 140 yards and a touchdown. Murriell had 17 carries for 129 yards and three scores.

Hart was 12-of-13 passing with a career high 183 yards and two touchdowns. With 2:27 remaining in the first half, Hart found senior wide receiver Chris Thompson open in the corner of the end zone for the duo’s first touchdown of the season. In the third quarter, Hart found junior wide receiver Dequon Swann on a 13-yard touchdown pass.

Northwood 34, Jordan-Matthews 0

SILER CITY — Northwood has made a habit recently of deep playoff runs.

But they haven’t been able to win what is to many of the Chargers’ players their most important game.

Until Friday night.

Northwood picked up its first victory in three years over Chatham County rival Jordan-Matthews, racing by the Jets 34-0 on the road.

Shane Peppers rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns while Sam Griffin connected twice with Ridge Smith for scores through the air. A.J. Farmer added a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Before the game, Northwood coach Bill hall said he had gfiven up trying to downplay to matchup, which Northwood had lost in three straight years.

“It was big night for the Chargers,” Hall said of the win.

Union Pines 51, Chatham Central 7

CAMERON — The Union Pines Vikings defeated the Chatham Central Bears in Friday night football 51-7.

The host Vikings defended their home field well. Although the offensive yardage totals were nearly even for each team, The Vikings still cruised to the victory.

Bears’ coach Bob Pegram was displeased with his team. “We didn’t show up to play,” Pegram said. “We’re off next week, so we’ll address the issues.”

Chatham Central did have one bright spot: Alex Wilson gained 82 yards on the ground for the Bears.

Harnett Central 23, Western Harnett 13

ANGIER — Harnett Central scored nine unanswered points in the fourth quarter to hold off Western Harnett 23-13 in football on Friday night.

The Eagles (1-2) entered the fourth quarter trailing just 14-13.
